The screening of My Name Is Khan has been hit with four exhibitors — Big Cinemas, Fun Cinemas, Gaiety Galaxy and Maratha Mandir — deciding against releasing the movie on Friday.
The exhibitors say the security situation doesn’t warrant release of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer movie.
“The security provided is adequate but at the same time the atmosphere which has been created is not good. Entertainment cannot happen in this tense environment,” said Fun Cinema CEO Vishal Kapoor.
However, Kaporr refused to blame Shah Rukh Khan for the controversy surrounding the film.
I don’t blame Shah Rukh for this. Everybody has got the right to speak for themselves,” said Kapoor.
“Nobody wants the Mumbaikers or their property hurt & destroyed. Least of all me. I may not have the same ideologies as the Sena but on the question of me being a patriot, I don’t think there should be any confusion. Feel awful that Balasahib and Uddhav have misconstrued my words. The reactions of the Sena workers seems to make me believe that,” Shahrukh Khan tweeted.
Extending support to Shah Rukh Khan, actor and IPL team Rajasthan Royals celebrity co-owner Shilpa Shetty today said it was unfortunate that the actor was being targeted for expressing his opinion.
Shiv Sena has threatened to stall the release of Khan’s upcoming film My Name Is Khan after he refused to apologise for his remarks favouring the inclusion of Pakistani players in IPL.
“It is everybody’s right to express his opinion. It is a fundamental right. When a film gets affected, the entire industry gets affected. I stand by him as a human being,” Shetty said when asked about her take on what was happening with Shah Rukh’s film My name… in Mumbai.
Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray called Shahrukh Khan ‘a traitor’, but said that Sena will not block screening of SRK’s film.
In an editorial in Sena mouthpiece Saamna on Saturday, Thackeray said: “Sometimes we feel why are we doing all this? How do we awaken this Congress party? That’s why we have decided rule the way you want to. You have come to power using the machinery. Hence we are aware of how far reaching your power. You are using and will continue to use your power to brutally attack the Shiv Sena, Shiv Sainiks and Saamna. This is how you rule. So go ahead. Let Pakistani cricketer play anywhere they want in the country. Let Australia
continue attacking Indians. Let Pakistan continue 26/11 like attacks anywhere in India
. Let Shah Rukh Khan show his film My Name Is Khan without security,” Thackeray said.
“Traitors, with the blessings of the Congress, go ahead; the Shiv Sena will not block you. Why our Shiv Sainiks should be beaten up and arrested?” he added.
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who is facing the Shiv Sena’s ire for saying that he favoured Pakistani players’ inclusion in the Indian Premier League (IPL), says he is “sad” his comments are being misconstrued as being against a group.
“Sad my statements are seen as a stand against a group instead of a stand for myself and my individuality, Differences in ideology should be grounds for debates and discussion. A must for freedom of thought. To see it any other way is so unfortunate” Shah Rukh tweeted Wednesday evening.
The Shiv Sena said if Shah Rukh failed to apologise for his statement, his next big release My Name Is Khan could be banned in Mumbai. He has also been warned that all his films could face a ban in the city if he failed to tender an apology. My Name Is Khan, one of the most awaited films this year, is set to release Feb 12. Shahrukh khan got support in his stand is the Bollywood fraternity, including actors like Aamir Khan, Preity Zinta, Mahesh Bhatt, Anupam Kher and director Anubhav Sinha to name a few. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also come out in open support of the star.
The Shiv Sena on Tuesday issued a direct threat to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan warning him to apologise for backing Pakistani cricketers and his ‘Mumbai belongs to all’ remarks.
Senior Shiv Sena leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi warned that none of Shah Rukh Khan’s movies will be allowed to be released in Mumbai if he failed to apologise for his comments.
“Whether it’s Shah Rukh or anyone else, the Shiv Sena says he must take back his comments, so he’ll have to do it. It’s better if he understands this well. Shah Rukh Khan will have to apologise or else we will not let his film release in Mumbai,” said Joshi.
Shahrukh Khan told in New York that he won’t bow down to the Sena’s threats and did not regret any of his comments whether it was on Pakistani cricketers in Indian Premier League or Mumbai belonging to all Indians.
