Earlier Vidya Balan was apprehensive about her sexy role in Dirty Picture, turning into soft porn. But Director of Dirty Picture Milan Luthria clarified her. He told her to watch films like Chicago and Burlesque which has showed women with strong and overtly sexual body language. Now Vidya Balan is happy to play the role of Silk Smita.
She said in an interview, “I loved the script and was almost shocked that they (Milan and Balaji) thought of me. I was shocked and thrilled because she is so unlike me. Silk Smitha’s sexuality is in your face. It is almost offensive.
Dirty Picture is an apt title for the movie. It is reflective of our perception of her. We feel that she could not have made a pretty picture.”
Let’s take a look at the life of Silk Smitha.
Silk Smitha was born on 2nd December 1960 and was known as Vijayalakshimi. She was from a poor family in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh.
She left her school for becoming film star just when she was studying in fourth class. She moved to Madras with her aunt to get some work in South Film Industry. After reaching to Chennai she found a sponsor who named her as ‘Smitha’. Silk was added to her name after she acted in the film Vandi Chakkaram in 1979.
She was a bold girl both off screen and onscreen.
She has worked in for over 200 Telugu, Malayalam,Tamil, Kannada and a few Hindi films. She was disappointed in love and finally she was found dead in her apartment in Chennai in 1996.
Her death is still a mystery because real reason is not found yet. Many claimed that it was a suicide because she has left a not behind her and few say reason behind her death is her alcohol addiction.
She has also opened her production house but it didn’t work for her and some people take is as a reason behind her death because she had financial losses.

She acted in Tamil movie Vandi Chakkaram, in 1979 where she played a girl named Silk. It was her first major break.
Her performance in the film Alaigal Oivathillai was appreciated by critics.
Chiranjeevi was starred in Yamakinkarudu and Silk Smitha played a minor role in this film.
She acted in supporting role in Moondru Mugam. Her bold dance number in the film made her a sex-symbol.
She acted in Moondram Pirai, it was biggest film for Smitha. Though Kamal Haasan and Sridevi played lead roles but Smitha made her presence felt as the headmaster’s wife. This film was remade in Hindi as Sadma and she also acted in it.
She again acted in Chiranjeevi film called Challenge and played the role of Gollapudi’s wife Primvada.
She also acted in Layanam which was released in 1989 and was a soft-porn masala flick. It was a popular film and it gained more popularity later when two of its actors, Nandu and Silk, died under mysterious situations.
Smitha was religious person because she used to pray several times a day.
In 80s, Silk Smitha’s cabarets and hot dance numbers were considered important to make a spicy film.
